South Eastern Europe after the crunch

Christos Pitelis, Director of CIBAM, was delighted to welcome Dr Deborah Allen, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility at BAE Systems, to a very stimulating talk. Dr Allen drew on the experience with BAE systems to explain to the audience how reputations are hard won and can easily lost, and how BAE Systems faced and managed to overcame a number of crises in the years 2001 to 2008. The presentation explored what brings a company to crisis and how painstaking and exhaustive the process of turning it around can and indeed needs to be.

Deborah studied natural sciences at Cambridge and progressed to a doctorate in chemical engineering. She specialised in environmental consultancy, working for major industries across the world. In 2001, she joined BAE Systems in the newly created corporate position of Director of Safety, Health and Environment. This role rapidly expanded to include the group responsibility for diversity and ethics. The combination of roles has since been entitled Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility encompassing the many and varied aspects arising from the governance and obligatory issues affecting a defence company in today’s world. She reports directly to the Chief Executive and leads the global CR team, which provides support in embedding aspects of CR throughout the Group.

Andrew Morgan, Chair CIBAM Global Advisory Board, drew on 27 years of experience working for Diageo to deliver an engaging Seminar on corporate strategy to an audience of students and academics.

Diageo, a global drinks company, derived around a third of its revenues from Europe prior to the recession of 2008. As a result of the recession, markets in South Europe declined rapidly and materially, leaving the total Diageo Europe performances highly challenged. To deal with this Diageo proactively executed a number of strategic changes to its Europe business. These changes included allocating resources to faster growing geographies, restructuring its organisation model, increasing focus on profitability, providing talent to other parts of the business and building a peerless reputation. The result was to turn downside risk into a number of upside contributions to the global performance and reputation of the company. Diageo’s market capitalisation doubled between 2008 and 2013.

The latest Seminar hosted by the Centre for International Business and Management (CIBAM), University of Bath School of Management on ‘Business Development & Strategy in the International Defence and Security Market’ was highly successful.

In his address to an audience consisting of 75 academics and students, Dr Llyr Jones Vice-President, Latin America & Canada, BAE Systems, analysed the evolution of the defence and security industry, based on his many years' experience with BAE Systems and other major contractors. He presented the macro-level factors impacting on the sector - namely global shifts of power, non-military events, economic downturns and technology disruptions and cyber and explore their implications. He discussed the shift in the nature of international business in the sector - i.e. from an approach based on the export of finished products to one weighted towards on long-term partnerships with the local industries of emerging markets. Dr Jones focussed on the growth of markets in his own area of responsibility, namely Canada and the Americas, but also highlighted other established and emerging markets. The talk was followed by a fascinating discussion, touching upon major issues and challenges of globalisation and global sectors and business, including the political economy of the defence sector. Christos Pitelis, Director CIBAM, was delighted to welcome the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor and the Dean of the School of Management to what proved to be a very successful event attended by over 90 delegates from academia and business.

Jack drew on his extensive experience in business as the CEO of major multinationals and an expert in acquisitions to discuss the critical steps required in order to develop and implement a successful corporate growth strategy. The event attended by students and academics proved to be very interesting and thought provoking for all, giving attendees an insight into the logic of acquisitions and why mergers so often fail.

The recent Seminar hosted by the Centre for International Business and Management (CIBAM), University of Bath School of Management on 'The Future of Retail' was highly successful.

In his address to an audience consisting of around 50 academics and students, David Roth highlighted that retail powers economic growth. He indicated that there would be more retail change in the next 10 years than there has been in the past 50, and that to understand our economic future we need to understand the past and where retail is going. He pinpointed the key drivers creating disruptive change in the retail industry and illustrated what 'The Future of Retail' in a digital world would be and its implications for consumers, brands, advertising, the economy and the universe.

Report from the CIBAM Global Business Symposium on Global Finance

The Report from the CIBAM Global Business Symposium on Global Finance exemplifies the CIBAM experience.

At the Board Meeting of February 2007, CIBAM Global Advisory Board member Jonathan Garner (Morgan Stanley), suggested that we hold an event on Global Finance. At the time the financial sector was still booming but Jonathan was sensing that things were about to turn sour. The event was held in February 2008, by which time the still current today global financial crisis had erupted.

The proceedings of the paper were published in academic journal Contributions to Political Economy.
